Kananaskis Golf Course Prepares for G7 Summit and Possible Trump Visit
As the G7 Leaders’ Summit approaches, all eyes are on the Kananaskis Country Golf Course in Alberta’s majestic Rocky Mountains. The course, set against the breathtaking backdrop of Mount Kidd, will play a central role during the summit from June 15 to 17, 2025. Darren Robinson, the golf course’s general manager, is preparing to welcome world leaders once again, following a similar role during the G8 summit in 2002.

A Historic Location for the G7 Summit
Robinson’s memories of the 2002 summit are still vivid. He recalls walking up to U.S. President George Bush and Spain’s Prime Minister José María Aznar to let them know that the pro shop was open. The brief exchange quickly turned into a friendly conversation about golf, running, and the stunning surroundings of Kananaskis. Robinson was left in awe, as he chatted with several world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Now, more than two decades later, Robinson is again preparing to possibly host some of the world’s most powerful people. Since the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge is hosting the summit, the golf course falls within the secured zone for leaders. The speculation around this year’s event includes potential golf outings, particularly with U.S. President Donald Trump, who has a known passion for golf.
A Possible Trump Golf Outing
There’s buzz that President Trump, a fan of golf, could tee off at Kananaskis Country Golf Club during the summit. Trump even owns merchandise from the course, gifted by Prime Minister Mark Carney during a May 2025 White House visit. Although no golf game has been confirmed by either government, the course’s scenic charm and history make it a fitting venue.
However, Robinson is keeping expectations modest. He recalls spontaneous golf moments during the 2002 summit, such as when Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien grabbed his clubs and took a few shots after a casual comment from Robinson. Chrétien’s impromptu golf play included a lighthearted “Clinton” reference after hitting an unfortunate chip shot. Robinson cherishes these moments, even if he doesn’t expect a repeat of those iconic exchanges.

Preparing for the Summit’s Tight Security
As the G7 summit draws near, preparations are in full swing. Airspace restrictions have been implemented, and Royal Canadian Air Force helicopters will be conducting low-level night flights around Kananaskis from June 5 to 18 to ensure security. These nighttime operations will help military personnel prepare for the summit’s security needs.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are leading the security operations, working with the Canadian military to ensure a safe environment for the leaders and visitors. The heightened security measures include closed airspace, restrictions on drone use, and other safety protocols. Residents and visitors are being asked for their cooperation during this time, and the Canadian Armed Forces have expressed gratitude for the public’s understanding.
Looking Ahead to the G7 Summit
Although the G7 summit itinerary remains under wraps, Robinson is hopeful for memorable moments—whether it’s a round of golf or casual interactions. As the general manager of the Kananaskis Country Golf Club, he understands how this picturesque location has long been a backdrop for major political events. The course already holds a place in history, having hosted leaders during the 2002 summit.
Now, as the world turns its attention to the upcoming gathering in the stunning Kananaskis mountains, Robinson and his team are preparing for the possibility of another iconic moment. Whether or not Trump takes the opportunity to play, the Kananaskis Country Golf Course is once again poised to be part of a significant chapter in global diplomacy.
