Massive Great White Shark Resurfaces Off North Carolina Coast

A massive great white shark, known as Contender, has resurfaced off the coast of North Carolina near the Outer Banks, adding to its migration story that began in January 2025. At nearly 14 feet long and weighing over 1,600 pounds, Contender is the largest tagged male white shark ever recorded by OCEARCH, a global nonprofit marine research group. Contender was first tagged by OCEARCH near the Florida-Georgia line back in January 2025. Since then, he has pinged multiple times, with recent data showing him just 22 miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. This marks an important part of his annual migration as great white sharks move from their southern overwintering areas to cooler waters up north, where food sources are plentiful.

The recent appearance of Contender near the Outer Banks is not a random event; this area serves as a key stop for sharks during their migration.
