TIFF CEO Apologizes for Handling of Oct. 7 Documentary After Backlash
TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey has issued a public apology. The apology addresses the festival’s handling of a documentary about the Oct. 7 attacks by Hamas.

The statement was made during a pre-festival media event. It was Bailey’s first public appearance since the festival’s decision to pull, and later reinvite, the film made headlines last week.
“I want to apologize for any hurt, frustration, or disappointment that our communication about the film has caused,” Bailey said. He added that TIFF is now working “to clarify things and to repair relationships.”
A Timeline of the Controversy
The film in question is titled The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue. Directed by Canadian Barry Avrich, it tells the story of retired army general Noam Tibon’s effort to save his family during the Oct. 7 attack in Israel.
TIFF initially invited the film, then withdrew the invitation. Early reports cited security concerns and issues with “legal clearance of all footage” as the reasons for its removal.

The decision caused a swift response. Criticism came from multiple organizations, including the Creative Community for Peace and the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA).
Film Reinstated, But Questions Remain
Following the criticism, TIFF announced the film was back in the festival lineup. The festival and the filmmakers released a joint statement confirming its return.
Noah Shack, the CEO of CIJA, said the apology and the film’s reinstatement are positive steps. However, he also called for “accountability” to ensure similar situations do not happen again.
“There are serious issues that need to be addressed in order for us to have confidence in things going forward,” Shack stated. He believes the initial removal went against the festival’s core values.

Shack also encouraged the public to see the movie. “It’s an incredible story,” he said. “I really encourage people to go and watch it.”
How to See the Film
The Road Between Us will have its premiere at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto.
The screening is scheduled for September 10. Tickets will be available to the public starting August 25.
