Evil Genius made its world premiere at Roy Thomson Hall as part of TIFF’s Gala Presentations. The film marks Cox’s second feature as a director and her return to feature filmmaking after 12 years.

The true-crime film takes on the disturbing 2003 “pizza bomber” case in Erie, Pennsylvania. Patricia Arquette plays Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong, while David Harbour portrays Bill Rothstein.

The story centres on the events surrounding pizza delivery driver Brian Wells, who died after an explosive device locked around his neck detonated following a bank robbery. Cox’s film draws inspiration from the 2018 Netflix documentary series of the same name.

Moviegoers can find more information about Evil Genius through TIFF’s official website.
