Cirque du Soleil’s Casting Sessions Came Before the Festival
Cirque du Soleil Casting ran clown workshops and auditions on October 7 and 8. A separate audition for circus acts followed on October 9. These sessions were linked to the festival, rather than part of its public street-show schedule.

Organizers describe the clown sessions as the company’s first in Japan. Charlie Burrows, who oversees casting for Cirque du Soleil’s resident shows, travelled from Las Vegas to attend. He also joined the festival’s opening ceremony on October 10.
The auditions gave performers a chance to work directly with an international casting team. They also gave the festival a role beyond putting on shows for visitors. The post-event release did not identify any casting results.
Another linked event, NEXT GATE OSAKA 2026, ran at SPACE14 on October 12. Organized by OnlineCircus, it served as a Japan selection event for the World Circus Arts Championship.
At Namba Square, the Jokes Needed Little Translation
The free program brought street shows to Namba Square, also called Namba Hiroba, from October 10 to 12. Its pedestrian setting in the Namba district put comedy in the path of people already exploring central Osaka.
Among the acts was THE TOKYO IDIOTS, a trio made up of TONY, WES-P and GASSY. TONY reached the finals of Britain’s Got Talent in 2023. WES-P has appeared on Got Talent programs in more than 10 countries and regions.
The trio brought audience members onstage for coordinated routines. Instead of making every joke depend on translated dialogue, performers used movement, timing and expressions. That format made the shows easier to follow for people who don’t speak Japanese.
On the final day, GABEZ closed the main stage with pantomime, dance and audience participation. The duo also appeared in the sports pictogram sequence at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic opening ceremony.
Children and international visitors joined parts of the finale, according to the organizers’ recap. The result was a crowd taking part in the same routine, even without a shared spoken language.
Ticketed Theatre Added Longer Shows
The outdoor acts were only one part of the program. Inside Shinsaibashi PARCO, SPACE14 hosted two ticketed comedy productions on October 10 and 11.
Akira Ishida of the Japanese comedy duo NON STYLE wrote, directed and produced CHALLENGE. The show used swordplay choreography, kendama (a Japanese cup-and-ball game), music and facial expressions to tell a story without dialogue.
SKIT COMEDY SHOW followed on October 11. It combined physical performance with acts that incorporated English, using a variety-show format inspired by traditional Japanese yose theatre.
This split matters for future visitors. The 2026 plaza performances had free admission, while the indoor shows required tickets. Organizers have not released ticket prices for a possible 2027 program.
From Expo 2025 to a Planned 2027 Return
The festival forms part of the Osaka International Cultural Arts Project. The initiative aims to maintain tourism and cultural interest after Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai. The first edition took place during the Expo; the second brought its main events to Minami.
Osaka already has long traditions of manzai, a dialogue-based double act, and rakugo, a form of solo comic storytelling. This festival put physical humour alongside those traditions and made performances accessible to more international visitors.
For travellers from Canada, Namba is also a practical area to know. Namba Square sits near Nankai Namba Station, which has rail service to Kansai International Airport. Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi are nearby.
Still, no dates or venues have been confirmed for 2027. Travellers should not book a trip around a specific festival weekend until the next schedule appears.
