TTC to Stop Accepting Tokens and Tickets After June 1, 2025
If you still have a stash of TTC tokens or tickets, it’s time to start using them. The Toronto Transit Commission has announced that starting June 1, 2025, it will no longer accept these old forms of payment.

The move marks the final step in the TTC’s transition to an electronic fare system. After this date, riders will need to pay using a Presto card, debit or credit card, or a mobile wallet.
What Payments Will Be Accepted?
After June 1, 2025, the old paper tickets, tokens, and day passes will not be accepted. Here are the ways you’ll be able to pay your fare:
- A physical Presto card
- Presto in Google Wallet or Apple Wallet
- Tapping a debit or credit card
- Cash will still be accepted in fare boxes on buses, streetcars, and in subway stations.
If you need to purchase a Presto card, they are available for $4 at TTC fare vending machines, Shoppers Drug Mart locations, and online at PrestoCard.ca.
Why Is the TTC Making This Change?
According to the TTC, very few riders still use the old fare types. The agency reports that less than 1% of passengers currently pay with tokens, tickets, or paper passes.

Subway stations stopped selling these items in 2019, and token production ended in 2023. The TTC states that this final step will help simplify the fare collection process and reduce the number of unpaid fares.
It is important to note that the TTC will not be offering refunds or exchanges for any leftover tokens or tickets. Riders are encouraged to use them up before the June 1 deadline.
A Quick Look at the Timeline
This change has been happening gradually over several years:
- 2019: The TTC stopped selling tokens and tickets at station collector booths.
- 2022: Third-party retailers stopped selling the old fare types.
- 2023: The manufacturing of TTC tokens was officially stopped.
- 2024: Use of tokens and tickets dropped to less than 1% of all riders.
- June 1, 2025: TTC will officially stop accepting these fares.
Are There Any Benefits to Using Presto?
Aside from tapping to pay, the Presto card also gives users access to the Presto Perks program. This program offers discounts at various attractions, restaurants, and events across Ontario. You can see the current list of offers at PrestoPerks.ca.
