Biden, 82, sought medical care last week due to urinary symptoms. Doctors discovered a prostate nodule, and further testing led to the diagnosis. A Gleason score of 9 — one of the highest grades indicating cancer aggressiveness — confirmed the severity of his condition.

Cancer Is Hormone-Sensitive, Says Biden’s Office

Despite the advanced stage of the disease, Biden’s office says the cancer is hormone-sensitive, meaning it responds to therapies that target hormone levels. This form of treatment can slow progression and offer better outcomes for patients with metastatic prostate cancer.

“While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management,” his office stated.

Biden and his family are currently reviewing treatment options with his medical team.

Reaction from Public Figures and Former Rivals

Former political rival Donald Trump expressed support on social media, writing, “We wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.”

Kamala Harris, Biden’s former vice-president and the 2024 Democratic nominee, shared her support online.
She said she was keeping him in her “hearts and prayers.”

“Joe is a fighter,” Harris wrote. “I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership.”

Health Was a Recurring Concern During Biden’s Presidency

Concerns over Joe Biden’s health were a central issue during his presidency and especially during his 2024 re-election campaign. After a widely criticized debate performance, Biden dropped out of the race, paving the way for Kamala Harris to become the Democratic nominee. She ultimately lost to Donald Trump, who reclaimed the White House.

This is not Biden’s first health scare. In 2023, he had a basal cell carcinoma removed from his chest. In 2021, doctors removed a pre-cancerous polyp from his colon.

Biden’s “Cancer Moonshot” and Personal Connection to the Disease

Biden has long championed cancer research. In 2022, he relaunched the “Cancer Moonshot” initiative, with the goal of reducing cancer death rates by 50% over 25 years. The initiative was deeply personal — his eldest son Beau Biden died from brain cancer in 2015.

Biden has frequently described fighting cancer as a national mission, calling it an “American moment to prove we can do really big things.”
