Kardinal Offishall Releases Firestarter Vol. 2: Everyday, Sometimes
Toronto hip hop icon Kardinal Offishall is back with a brand new album.
The Canadian rapper, producer and music executive released his sixth solo studio album, Firestarter Vol. 2: Everyday, Sometimes, on September 25.
The 10 track project is available now on streaming platforms through Kardinal’s own Black Stone Colleagues label.
The album marks Kardinal’s first full solo studio release in more than a decade and features a wide lineup of artists from Canada and around the world.
Featured guests include T Pain, Black Thought of The Roots, Buju Banton, Stove God Cooks, Idris Elba, Konshens, Glenn Lewis, NESTA, Melanie Fiona, Cipha Sounds and BJ The Chicago Kid.
Kardinal also produced eight of the album’s 10 tracks.
A New Chapter for the Toronto Artist
The album opens with “Heavy Is the Head,” setting the tone for the project before moving into “40 Acres and a Ferrari,” featuring Black Thought and Stove God Cooks.
On “All Nighter,” Kardinal teams up with T Pain and Jamaican dancehall artist Konshens, while veteran New York DJ Cipha Sounds appears on the intro.
The project also includes “Kiss Me When I,” featuring fellow Canadian artist and longtime collaborator Glenn Lewis.
The track brings a smooth R&B sound to the album and was produced by Grammy Award winning producer DRTWRK.
Another major collaboration comes on “Top 3,” featuring Buju Banton and Idris Elba.
The song brings together influences from Toronto, Jamaica and London for a dancehall focused collaboration.
Canadian Talent Featured Throughout the Album
Kardinal also works with rising artist NESTA on “My Brother’s Keeper Part 2.”
The reggae influenced track focuses on brotherhood, loyalty and the shared experiences of first generation Jamaican Canadians and Jamaican Americans.
Canadian singer Melanie Fiona appears on “When You’re In Love,” a soulful track exploring the different stages of a relationship.
Idris Elba joins Kardinal again on “Bombay Sunsets,” followed by “Where There’s Smoke,” a track influenced by classic hip hop and dancehall sounds.
The album closes with “Everyday, Sometimes,” featuring Grammy nominated singer songwriter BJ The Chicago Kid.
The final track reflects on personal struggles, achievements and everyday life.
Kardinal Offishall Reflects on the Album
In a statement shared with the album release, Kardinal reflected on his career, his connection to Toronto and Jamaica, and the themes behind the project.
He explained that the album explores different parts of life, including love, heartbreak, triumph, spirituality, substance abuse, narcissism, despair and hope.
The release also arrives 25 years after the original Firestarter project, bringing the artist back to one of the most recognizable chapters of his career.
