An Air Canada pilot openly expressed frustration over the shortage of air traffic controllers during a recent Vancouver to Montreal flight. The pilot urged passengers to contact their Members of Parliament to push for solutions to ongoing delays at airports nationwide.

What Happened on the Flight?

The pilot announced a 50-minute delay and explained the cause: Nav Canada, the private company managing air traffic control, is struggling with staff shortages. Sick calls among controllers created delays that affected the flight schedule.

He accused Nav Canada of intentionally limiting new trainee numbers to keep overtime costs high — a claim the company denies.

“Please write your MP and let them know how these delays are impacting your plans,” the pilot told passengers.

Nav Canada’s Response

Nav Canada confirmed there are “resource constraints” causing delays and cancellations, especially at Vancouver International Airport (YVR).

The company is increasing its training efforts. Currently, there are about 500 trainees nationwide, with plans to grow to roughly 1,500 by 2028.

Nav Canada rejects accusations of rejecting trainees to protect overtime. They said every candidate gets thorough support and review before any training decisions are made.

Impact on Airlines and Passengers

The shortage is a nationwide problem. Tim Perry, president of the Air Line Pilots Association, said delays are frustrating for both passengers and pilots, but the issue isn’t individual controllers — it’s staffing levels.

Smaller airlines, like Indigenous-owned Iskwew Air, also face delays daily, some lasting up to two hours. This significantly affects short flights around Vancouver.

What’s Next?

Nav Canada’s expanded training programs aim to ease the problem in the long term. However, delays are expected to continue for several weeks.

Industry leaders call for collaboration between the government, unions, and employers to fully address the staffing shortage and improve airport operations.
