After more than a decade of delays, the highly anticipated Eglinton Crosstown LRT is nearly ready for its debut. Toronto residents are now placing bets on its opening date. The FanDuel Canada betting site has introduced a fun way for Torontonians to wager on the official launch of the 19-kilometre light rail line, which is set to transform the city’s transit system.

Why the Bet?

The Eglinton Crosstown LRT has faced setbacks, including shifting timelines, construction issues, and litigation. Despite these challenges, the line is nearing completion. There’s growing optimism that it could open as early as September 2025.

Currently, FanDuel Canada is allowing users to place bets on when the line will officially start service. The most favored timeframe for the opening is between September 16 and September 30, 2025. There’s also a longshot chance it could open before August 31. The bet will be settled based on the official public opening date, once the line is open for regular passenger service.

A Step Closer to Completion

Officials have been careful with their communication, confirming that all civil infrastructure is complete and that the TTC has taken full control of the 28 trains that will operate on the line. A key milestone was reached last Tuesday when Metrolinx handed over operations to the TTC’s command center at Hillcrest. However, before the line opens to the public, there are still two critical phases left: a 14-day trial period followed by a 30-day revenue service demonstration where the system will run as if it’s open to the public, but without passengers.

Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria has expressed hope that the line will open by September 2025, in line with previous projections.

What’s Next?

Although construction is wrapping up, the public will have to wait a little longer for the official opening of the LRT. In the meantime, fans of the project can get involved in the action by placing their bets on the launch date, making this construction saga a bit more fun and interactive.

What’s your bet — will the Eglinton Crosstown LRT open before September 30, 2025, or will we have to wait longer?
