United Airlines Resolves Tech Issue, but Travel Disruptions Continue

· · ·

United Airlines has largely restored normal operations after a technology outage on Wednesday night grounded flights across its network. The outage, which affected the airline’s Unimatic system, disrupted over 1,000 flights, resulting in hundreds of cancellations and delays. While the issue has been resolved, residual delays and cancellations continued into Thursday.

The Impact of the Outage

The outage, which began late Wednesday, involved a system failure related to Unimatic, a system that holds flight data crucial for flight calculations, weight, and balance. This issue grounded flights at major hubs like Chicago O’Hare, Newark, and San Francisco, causing delays for 35% of United’s flights and 7% cancellations on Wednesday.

By Thursday morning, 154 flights were canceled, and 179 flights were delayed. However, United Airlines clarified that the situation was being treated as a “controllable” disruption, which means passengers are entitled to compensation and accommodation such as hotel stays, depending on the circumstances.

Passenger Frustrations

Many passengers, such as Jenny Billman, faced severe delays. Billman and her husband, returning to Texas from vacation, were stranded on a plane for four hours in Denver before being told their flight was canceled. They eventually reached Dallas 16 hours late, enduring uncomfortable conditions, including hot temperatures inside the plane.

United Airlines expressed apologies for the inconvenience caused. The airline stated that hotel expenses were covered where applicable and that it was working to restore regular operations. Prime Minister Mark Carney reiterated the company’s commitment to getting passengers to their destinations despite ongoing delays.

How to Handle Delays and Cancellations

For those affected by the disruptions, United Airlines offers certain protections for canceled and delayed flights. If your flight is canceled, you are entitled to a refund even if you have a nonrefundable ticket. For delays, compensation may depend on whether the issue is deemed controllable or non-controllable.

As United Airlines works to recover from this massive outage, it’s clear that customer support and timely communication will be crucial in maintaining passenger trust.
