Waterfront Neighbourhood Space Opens on Toronto’s Eastern Waterfront with Circular Design Focus

Waterfront Toronto, in partnership with C40 Cities and the City of Toronto, will officially open the Waterfront Neighbourhood Space on July 4, 2026. The temporary public installation is located along the Commissioner Street corridor, near Biidaasige Park and the future route of the Waterfront East Rapid Transit line.

A public opening event will run from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., offering visitors live music, family-friendly activities, craft workshops, planting sessions, and remarks from project partners.

A Public Space Built Through Material Reuse

The Waterfront Neighbourhood Space introduces a construction approach focused on reuse and material recovery.

Project teams incorporated reclaimed concrete utility cores, manhole covers, and salvaged timber from residential renovations into the site design. These materials now form seating areas, structural features, and custom-built installations across the space.

Rather than sending these materials into waste streams, the project integrates them directly into public infrastructure. This approach highlights how existing urban materials can be adapted for new community use.

A Corridor Preparing for Future Transit Development

The site sits along the Commissioner Street corridor, an area planned for future transit expansion under the Waterfront East Rapid Transit project.
