The Word on the Street Toronto 2026: Schedule, Authors and Family Programming
Toronto’s biggest outdoor celebration of books returns to David Pecaut Square on September 26 and 27, 2026. The 37th annual Word on the Street festival is free to attend, offering author conversations, readings, hands-on workshops, children’s programming, and an expansive exhibitor marketplace that brings publishers, independent bookstores, and literary organizations together in downtown Toronto. Saturday runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. While most programming is drop-in, workshops require advance registration.

Saturday Program Highlights
The Neighbourhood Stage opens its main program at 11:30 a.m. with Toronto Poet Laureate Lillian Allen and guests. From 12:45 to 4:15 p.m., the stage hosts a sequence of Toronto Book Awards finalist conversations featuring Jackie Khalilieh, Don Gillmor, Carolyn Strange, Kate Cayley, and Sharon Bala. At 4:30 p.m., Shahaddah Jack and guest youth poets close the stage with From Streets to Stanzas, a session exploring lived experience and lyrical activism.
- Love & Shadows Stage: Features genre conversations including YA horror at 11:30 a.m., feminist horror at 12:30 p.m., and later appearances by Kelley Armstrong, Kate Hilton, Shari Lapena, and Jennifer Hillier.
- Vibrant Voices: Features a food-and-identity conversation at 2:30 p.m., followed by a session with Rachel Phan at 3:30 p.m.
Sunday Program Highlights
Sunday’s Neighbourhood Stage examines the urban landscape with sessions on local history and storytelling. Local Histories begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by Cities We Live In at 11:30 a.m., Writing Toronto at 12:30 p.m., and Life in Music at 1:30 p.m. These compact sessions allow visitors to sample multiple discussions throughout the day.
- Vibrant Voices: Hosts the Human Intelligence panel at 11:30 a.m.
- General Schedule: Spans fiction, poetry, criticism, and nonfiction across the site, with official live schedules serving as the source of truth for last-minute adjustments.
Family Activities and Exhibitor Marketplace
The Young Readers Tent and Kids Activity Tent run interactive programming for children and caregivers all weekend long. The exhibitor marketplace features children’s publishers, Owlkids magazines, CBC Kids, and the Toronto Public Library Bookmobile. Official booksellers include Another Story Bookshop, Ella Minnow Children’s Bookstore, and Queen Books, with author signings frequently following stage sessions.
Practical Planning and Logistics
David Pecaut Square features concrete walkways, benches, and onsite washrooms and water stations. Visitors requiring specific accessibility accommodations are encouraged to contact festival organizers in advance. Because paid downtown parking is limited, taking public transit is strongly recommended during the busy weekend.
