Trung Hoang’s First Solo Photography Exhibition Opens at Black Rabbit Gallery
Lately brings Hoang’s patient, observational photographs to Regent Park alongside the launch of his independently published book, Lately: Zanzibar.

A new photography exhibition is opening a few steps from the streets where its artist grew up. On October 15, Toronto photographer Trung Hoang will open Lately at Black Rabbit Gallery in Regent Park, marking his first solo exhibition and the gallery’s first presentation devoted to photography.
The show runs through November 5 and gathers work made across several years and places. Instead of arranging the photographs as a travel diary, Hoang and the gallery have shaped the exhibition around visual echoes: a gesture, a pause, a change in light or the rhythm of daily work.
The official Lately exhibition page lists the opening reception for Thursday, October 15, from 7 to 10 p.m. at Black Rabbit Gallery’s Ratna Lane courtyard entrance at 35 Tubman Avenue. The opening also serves as the launch for Hoang’s independently published photobook, Lately: Zanzibar.
The Photographs Follow Movement Without Turning Travel Into Spectacle
Hoang was born in Vietnam and spent formative years in Toronto’s Regent Park. His photography practice developed alongside a two-decade career in music and culture, including work as a magazine publisher, label executive and artist manager with Grammy- and JUNO-nominated artists.
That background matters to the way he photographs. His portraits and documentary images lean on patience rather than direction. People are often shown in unposed moments, while the surrounding place remains part of the story. The gallery describes his attention as grounded in the idea that understanding begins with presence.
Lately applies that approach to photographs made across Zanzibar, Vietnam, China, Toronto, Sicily, Six Nations and other periods of Hoang’s life. The connection between the works is emotional and visual, not chronological. The result is intended to feel like a constellation of images that stayed with the artist rather than a checklist of destinations.

Lately: Zanzibar Launches On Opening Night
Opening night adds a second reason to visit: the release of Lately: Zanzibar, an independently published photobook built from Hoang’s time on the Tanzanian archipelago. The book centres daily life, labour, movement and the relationship between people and place. Black Rabbit Gallery lists the price at $80 CAD.
The book narrows the geographic frame while extending the exhibition’s central ideas. Where Lately moves between countries and communities, Lately: Zanzibar stays with one place and the encounters Hoang recorded there. Both rely on small observations rather than staged scenes.

Exhibition Prints Are Available In Limited Editions
Works from Lately are being offered as signed and numbered archival pigment prints on 100 per cent cotton rag paper. Black Rabbit Gallery is handling collector previews, edition details, private appointments and acquisition inquiries directly.
The exhibition follows Daniella Williams’s Origin, which Over Here Toronto covered in a guide to the gallery’s previous solo presentation. Lately moves the gallery’s program from figurative painting into photography while maintaining its focus on Toronto artists and close observation.
