Heavy Snow and Extreme Cold Across Western Canada

British Columbia is under multiple warnings, with Arctic outflow winds affecting North Coast and Whistler through Thursday. Yoho and Kootenay Parks could see wind chills dropping to -35°C by Friday morning.

In Manitoba and Saskatchewan, nearly the entire southern half of both provinces is under an extreme cold warning. Cities like Winnipeg, Regina, and Saskatoon face a prolonged period of wind chills reaching -40°C or lower.

Southern Ontario and Quebec Face Mixed Storm Conditions

In Ontario, snowfall warnings cover large areas, including the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). Toronto is expecting 15 cm of snow, while Ottawa could see up to 40 cm by Thursday. The Ontario Provincial Police have advised against non-essential travel, warning that roads will be dangerous.

Quebec is bracing for heavy snowfall and winter storm conditions. Montreal, Quebec City, and Gatineau are expected to receive between 15 and 40 cm of snow, along with moderate winds creating blowing snow hazards. Many schools in Montreal have already announced closures for Thursday.

East Coast Prepares for Messy Conditions

The Maritimes and Newfoundland are also in the path of the storm.

  • New Brunswick is expecting 15 to 25 cm of snow, with ice pellets possible in the afternoon.
  • Nova Scotia faces a mix of snow and rain, with Halifax expecting up to 10 cm of accumulation.
  • Prince Edward Island is under snowfall warnings, with some areas expected to see up to 25 cm of snow.
  • Newfoundland and Labrador are also under a combination of winter storm warnings and special weather statements.

Travel Disruptions and Safety Precautions

Toronto Pearson International Airport has already cancelled several flights due to the approaching storm. Winter driving conditions will be hazardous across much of Ontario, Quebec, and the Atlantic provinces.

Residents are advised to:

  • Check weather updates regularly for changes in warnings.
  • Avoid unnecessary travel, especially in areas expecting heavy snow or extreme cold.
  • Prepare emergency supplies, including food, water, and flashlights, in case of power outages.
  • Dress in warm layers and limit time outdoors in extreme cold.

With over a month of winter remaining, Canadians should expect more severe weather before spring arrives. Environment Canada continues to monitor the situation, providing updates as conditions develop.
