Isabella Ruyu Yan Wins 3rd National Tennis Title at 13 — Canada’s Rising Star
At just 13 years old, Isabella Ruyu Yan is already a three-time national tennis champion, and if you ask her coach, her competition, or even her own dad — she’s only getting started.

The Regina-based athlete just claimed the 2025 U16 national title, beating opponents two years older and often much bigger than her. It’s her third Canadian title in a row, following wins in the U12 (2023) and U14 (2024) categories. The achievement makes her one of Canada’s most exciting young tennis prospects in recent memory.
A Tiny Powerhouse with Big Dreams
At first glance, Isabella might seem unassuming. With her small stature and braces, she’s every bit the teenage student. But put her on the court, and she transforms into a fierce competitor.
“People usually get intimidated by me,” she joked, “even though I’m the small one.”
Her love for tennis began at age 7. By 8, she was already breaking three rackets in one hour during practice. Her father, Sam Zhou, calls her his “little sweetheart,” but he also knows she’s got a killer instinct.

“Every time she sees the ball coming, she wants to hit it hard,” he said proudly.
Family Sacrifices and Fierce Dedication

Behind Isabella’s rise is an immense amount of family commitment. Her dad works two jobs — in paratransit and trucking — to cover the cost of her training and national travel. Her mother, Amanda Yan, helps manage schedules and logistics, while both parents credit coach Marek Nehasil for her rapid development.
Nehasil believes Isabella has the potential to go far but says the next step is international exposure. Competing in ITF tournaments could earn her valuable points and experience — and put her on the road to Grand Slam events.
A Canadian Star in the Making
Isabella already has a sponsorship with Head, a major tennis brand. She hopes to one day sign with Nike, like many of her tennis idols. Her father believes she’s already at that level — and that Canadian companies would do well to support her now.

“In less than three years, you’ll see her on national TV,” Zhou said.
For her part, Isabella is focused but humble. “The moment you win that last shot, it’s amazing,” she said. “I love the feeling of winning.”
Tennis Talent Grown in Regina
Despite her success, Isabella often struggles to find local competition. Her coach and dad say there’s no one in Saskatchewan — kid or adult — who can match her level. That’s why international matches and out-of-province tournaments are so important for her growth.
Even so, she’s proud of her home club: Regina’s Lakeshore Tennis Club, where she continues to train and sharpen her game.
A Father-Daughter Team Fueled by Love

Behind every match and every medal is a close bond between Isabella and her dad. They share a passion for the sport — and for each other.
“If I didn’t have him, I wouldn’t be where I am,” Isabella said, tearing up. “He’s been there through my highs and lows. I’m really grateful.”
