Loblaw Bread Settlement: How to Claim Your Share of the $500M Payout in Canada
Did you buy packaged bread in Canada anytime from 2001 to 2021? If so, you could be entitled to money from the $500-million Loblaw bread settlement—a historic class-action payout involving one of the country’s biggest grocery retailers.
Recently approved by the Ontario Superior Court, the Loblaw bread settlement resolves claims that Loblaw and parent company George Weston were part of a long-running price-fixing scheme that artificially raised the cost of bread for millions of Canadians. With over $400 million set aside for consumers, most people in Canada are eligible for compensation—even without receipts.
Here’s what you need to know, who qualifies, and how to claim your slice of the dough.
What’s This Settlement About?
Between 2001 and 2015, Loblaw Companies Limited and parent company George Weston were accused of taking part in a 14-year industry-wide price-fixing scheme. The result? Canadians unknowingly paid inflated prices for packaged bread.
On May 7, 2025, Ontario Superior Court approved a settlement worth $500 million, calling it a “fair result for all concerned.”

Only Loblaw and George Weston have agreed to settle so far. Other companies named in the class action—like Sobeys, Metro, Walmart, and Giant Tiger—have denied the allegations.
Who’s Eligible?
If you bought any packaged bread between January 1, 2001, and December 31, 2021, you’re likely eligible.
There are two settlement classes:
- Ontario Settlement (covers all provinces and territories outside Quebec)

How Much Could You Get?
- If you didn’t claim Loblaw’s 2018 $25 gift card, you may receive up to $25.
- If you did claim the gift card, the $25 will be deducted from your final payout.
- If there’s money left over after the initial payouts, it may be divided among all claimants, including those who used the gift card.
Your payout depends on the total number of valid claims. More claimants = smaller individual payouts.
How to File a Claim
You’re automatically included if eligible—but to receive money, you’ll eventually need to submit a claim when the process opens.
