RCMP Investigate Security Incident at Calgary International Airport

Passengers Describe the Incident

“We were about to board the plane when they asked us to return to security. They scanned our hands and checked our belongings before allowing us back into the terminal,” she explained.

Another passenger, Josh Triemstra, initially thought the police presence was due to an unruly traveler. However, he later saw sniffer dogs entering the aircraft’s cargo area, indicating a more serious security concern.

“They informed us about a security breach and made us exit the terminal. We had to re-enter through security, show identification, and go through additional screening,” Triemstra said.

Passengers waited nearly four hours before WestJet confirmed the flight’s cancellation. While some travelers were accommodated on later flights, others were forced to stay overnight in Calgary before continuing their journey.

Calgary Airport Authority’s Response

The Calgary Airport Authority issued a statement acknowledging the security incident but assured travelers that the risk remained low throughout the event.

“We are taking all necessary security precautions to ensure everyone’s safety,” the statement read.

Later in the day, the airport authority confirmed that the situation had been resolved and no active threat remained. However, RCMP and the Calgary Police Service (CPS) continue to investigate the nature of the security breach.

The RCMP and CPS are collaborating on the investigation but have not disclosed specific details regarding the nature of the threat. RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney stated that the authorities are focused on ensuring public safety while the inquiry remains ongoing.
