Duo reports for duty in downtown Toronto

The Toronto takeover begins at 10:30 a.m. at Taco Bell, 252 Church Street. Taco Bell Canada says Duo will join the restaurant team for the day as part of the Global Taco Day promotion.

Visitors can meet Duo, try the new Duo Habanero Sauce and enter for a chance to receive limited-edition items. The Canadian activation includes Taco Bell x Duo plushies and tote bags while supplies last. There will also be opportunities to win Super Duolingo codes.

Taco Bell has not announced an end time for the Toronto activation. The company says the branded items and codes will be limited.

The partnership also introduces Duo Habanero Sauce at participating Taco Bell restaurants across Canada starting October 6. Taco Bell describes it as bright and tangy, with fruity notes and habanero heat that builds as you eat.

In Canada, customers can get the sauce at no extra charge with qualifying taco orders while supplies last. Qualifying orders include several core tacos. The list covers the Crunchy Taco, Crunchy Taco Supreme, Soft Taco and Soft Taco Supreme. Doritos Locos Tacos, Doritos Locos Tacos Supreme and the 2 Soft Taco Combo also qualify.

The Canadian version of the sauce comes in ramekins printed with taco-themed sayings in English, French, Spanish and Mandarin. Those four languages differ from the broader international campaign, which uses a larger set of languages across participating markets.

The collab turns Taco Day into a global campaign

Taco Bell is using this year’s promotion to take its annual Taco Day campaign beyond the United States. The campaign also includes activations in New York City, Mumbai and Shanghai. Participating restaurants in Canada, the U.S., Australia, China, India, Spain and the UK will carry the sauce.

The idea centres on the word “taco”, which stays recognizable across many languages. Duolingo’s role adds language-themed packaging and giveaways to the food promotion, while Taco Bell supplies the limited-time menu tie-in.

It also follows several years of Taco Bell campaigns around the date. In 2023, the company backed changes to Taco Tuesday trademark use in the U.S. A year later, it worked with National Day Calendar to move National Taco Day to the first Tuesday in October.

What Toronto visitors should know before going

For people outside downtown Toronto, the Duo Habanero Sauce is not limited to the Church Street activation. Taco Bell plans to launch it at participating restaurants across Canada with qualifying taco orders while supplies last.
