The Housewife Makes Its World Premiere at TIFF 2026
The Housewife made its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival as part of TIFF’s Special Presentations programme. The premiere took place at the Royal Alexandra Theatre on Thursday, September 10.
The film comes from director Ben Shirinian, making his feature directorial debut, with a screenplay by Alyssa Hill. Its cast includes Naomi Watts, Tye Sheridan, Luke Evans and Michael Imperioli.
Set in 1964 Queens, New York, the drama follows a young New York Times journalist investigating a suspected former Nazi living quietly in the neighbourhood. The case takes a darker turn when he becomes acquainted with the suspect’s seemingly charming wife.
Watts plays Hermine Ryan, a character based on Hermine Braunsteiner Ryan, a former Nazi concentration camp guard whose past was uncovered years after she moved to the United States. Sheridan plays journalist Joseph Lelyveld, while Evans portrays Hermine’s husband, Russell.

After the screening, the TIFF night continued west along King Street.
