Wayne Gretzky Wine Labels Controversy: LCBO Denies Tampering Claims

· · ·

The Ontario Liquor Control Board (LCBO) has denied reports that Wayne Gretzky wine labels were altered in its stores, following viral social media posts mocking the former NHL player’s ties to U.S. President Donald Trump. The controversy arose when images surfaced online showing allegedly doctored descriptions under bottles of Wayne Gretzky Estates wines, describing them with terms like “weak and backstabbery” and suggesting questionable wine pairings.

Altered Wine Labels Spark Online Reactions

The edited labels, first posted on Reddit, featured satirical descriptions targeting Gretzky. One label described his Pinot Grigio as “delighting with notes of elitism and affluence,” while another called the Cabernet Merlot “weak as its namesake’s moral fiber.” The mock descriptions also falsely listed the wines’ country of origin as the United States, despite their actual production in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario.

The images quickly gained traction on social media, with many Canadians reacting with humor. Some users on Reddit and Twitter expressed their discontent with Gretzky’s association with Trump, while others questioned the authenticity of the altered descriptions.

LCBO Responds: No Evidence of Label Alterations

Following the viral posts, the LCBO issued a statement asserting that it had found no evidence of product label tampering in any of its stores. A spokesperson said, “These may be photoshopped,” and emphasized that the LCBO prioritizes product integrity.

BlogTO visited the Toronto LCBO store, checked for the altered labels, but found none. Store employees were also unaware of any label replacements, and the store manager declined to comment.

Wayne Gretzky and Trump Controversy

The controversy surrounding Gretzky stems from his continued public support for Donald Trump, which has divided public opinion in Canada. Photographers captured him at Trump’s 2025 inauguration, and he previously attended events while wearing a Make America Great Again (MAGA) cap. Amid Canada’s ongoing trade disputes with the U.S., his silence on Trump’s new tariffs against Canada has fueled criticism.

A petition to rename Wayne Gretzky Drive in Edmonton has also gained traction, garnering over 13,000 signatures as of March 13, 2025. Meanwhile, Trump defended Gretzky in a Truth Social post, calling him a “fantastic guy.”

While the authenticity of the altered wine descriptions remains in question, the social media reaction highlights a growing divide in public sentiment. Many Canadians see Gretzky’s political affiliations as a betrayal of national values, while others argue that his personal choices should not impact his business ventures.

As the controversy continues, Wayne Gretzky Estates has yet to issue an official response regarding the incident.
