Flower Moon 2025: When & Where to Watch in Canada
Canada’s night sky will shine brighter this May as the “Flower Moon” reaches its peak on May 12, 2025. This full moon, named for the abundant spring blooms across North America, will offer Canadians a stunning celestial display—even as a micromoon.

Here’s what Canadians need to know about when and where to catch the Flower Moon in all its glory.
When to See the Flower Moon in Canada
The Full Flower Moon reaches peak illumination at 12:56 p.m. EDT (9:56 a.m. PDT) on Monday, May 12. However, stargazers across Canada will get their best views after sunset.
Depending on your location:
- Toronto & Eastern Canada: Moonrise around 8:30 p.m. EDT.
- Montreal & Ottawa: Around 8:20–8:30 p.m. EDT.
- Winnipeg: Approximately 9:10 p.m. CDT.
- Calgary: Look to the southeastern sky around 9:30 p.m. MDT.
- Vancouver: First glimpse expected around 8:50 p.m. PDT.
The moon will appear full from Sunday night (May 11) through early Tuesday (May 13), so Canadians have a wide window to enjoy the spectacle.

Why Is It Called the Flower Moon?
The name “Flower Moon” comes from Indigenous and European traditions, celebrating the spring bloom of wildflowers across Canada and beyond. Algonquin peoples, among others, used this name to mark the season of renewal and growth.
Other Indigenous names for May’s full moon include:
- “Blossom Moon” (Anishnaabe)
- “Mulberry Moon” (Creek & Choctaw)
- “Frog Moon” (Cree)
A Micromoon Over Canada
This year’s Flower Moon is also a micromoon, meaning it occurs when the moon is at its farthest point from Earth in its orbit. Expect the moon to appear about 14% smaller and 30% dimmer than a typical full moon.
Even so, its rising over Canada’s vast landscapes—be it the Rockies, Prairies, or Great Lakes—will offer a breathtaking view.

What to Look for
While a full moon’s brightness can wash out faint celestial objects, there’s still plenty to observe:
- Lunar maria (dark “seas”): Easily visible to the naked eye.
- Ejecta rays: Bright streaks from ancient impact sites.
- Moon’s golden-orange glow near the horizon due to atmospheric scattering.
- Planets: Look west for Mars and Jupiter after sunset.
- Bright stars like Arcturus and Spica will frame the moon.
Early risers can spot Venus, Saturn, and Neptune climbing the eastern sky in the pre-dawn hours of May 13.
How to Watch & Photograph the Flower Moon in Canada
To get the best view:
- Find an area with unobstructed views of the southeastern horizon.
- Rural locations away from city lights will enhance visibility.
- Use binoculars or a beginner telescope for a closer look at the lunar surface.
- For photographers, consider capturing the moon with Canadian landmarks for iconic shots.
