Gordie Howe International Bridge Reaches Milestone as Completion Nears
The Gordie Howe International Bridge, a $6.4 billion mega-project linking Detroit and Windsor, is nearing completion. This marks a major milestone in the development of North America’s longest cable-stayed bridge span. Designed to ease cross-border traffic and enhance trade, the bridge has successfully passed a key phase as it approaches its planned fall opening.

A Historic Achievement
This week, the construction team announced that the two large cranes used to build the bridge’s support towers have been decommissioned. Installed in 2020, these cranes played a key role in building the towers, which reach 220 meters (722 feet) above the Detroit River. Using a self-climbing method, the cranes reached a final height of 243 meters (797 feet).
After the cranes reached their maximum height, workers reversed the self-climbing process to dismantle the cranes carefully. Crews fully dismantled the Canadian crane on the Ontario side in May. In addition, they expect to finish dismantling the U.S. crane by the end of June.
Construction Progress and Upcoming Challenges

Though the removal of the cranes marks a big step, much work remains before the September opening. The team is working on finishing crucial tasks, such as installing electrical systems, fire suppression systems, drainage, barriers, signage, and lighting. Additionally, a multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists will be added to ensure easy access to the bridge for all.
Once completed, the Gordie Howe International Bridge will relieve pressure on the Ambassador Bridge, which currently handles a large volume of freight traffic between the U.S. and Canada. This new bridge will support a higher trade capacity, creating a vital link between Ontario and Michigan.

A Changing Political Landscape

Despite the excitement surrounding the bridge, there are ongoing concerns related to the evolving nature of cross-border relations. Issues like the decline in Canadian tourism to the U.S. and boycotts of American products could impact the bridge’s long-term success. However, with construction nearly complete, the bridge is set to play a crucial role in boosting trade and economic growth in the region.
Do you think the bridge will help improve cross-border travel and trade, or will political factors limit its potential?
