Royal Canoe Bassist Brendan Berg and Partner Killed in Canada Day Crash in Manitoba

Winnipeg musician Brendan Berg and his partner Olivia Michalczuk have died following a tragic highway crash on Canada Day. The head-on collision happened on Highway 10, just north of Bowsman, Manitoba, according to the RCMP.

Crash Occurred During Holiday Afternoon

The fatal crash took place around 3:30 p.m. on July 1, about 280 kilometers northwest of Brandon. RCMP reported that a southbound vehicle crossed the center line and struck another vehicle believed to be parked on the east side of the highway. The impact caused the second vehicle to roll into the ditch.

Both Berg, 42, and Michalczuk, 31, were taken to hospital, where they later died. The two men in the other vehicle—a 36-year-old Winnipeg driver and a 29-year-old Swan River passenger—remain hospitalized with critical injuries.

Berg was the longtime bassist of Winnipeg indie-pop band Royal Canoe, known for their experimental sound and creative stage shows. The band confirmed the news on Instagram, calling Berg the “kindest, sweetest man” and highlighting his 15 years of dedication to touring and recording.

The band also paid tribute to Michalczuk, noting how her energy and enthusiasm deeply impacted Brendan and those around her. “Her passing is equally as devastating to try to understand,” the group said.

Police Investigation Ongoing

The Swan River RCMP and collision investigators continue to examine the cause of the crash. As of July 2, this brings the number of road fatalities in RCMP jurisdiction this year to 32, an increase from 23 during the same period in 2024.

A Loss Felt Across Manitoba’s Music Community

Fans and fellow musicians have expressed shock and grief at the sudden loss. Berg’s contributions went beyond the stage—he often volunteered to handle the gritty parts of touring, from hauling gear to managing logistics. His bandmates say his relentless positivity and generosity made him the heart of the group.
