This victory earned Mboko her first-ever WTA title and made her the third Canadian to win the coveted tournament, joining Bianca Andreescu (2019) and Faye Urban (1969) in the Open Era.

A Fairy Tale Comeback

Mboko’s journey to the final has been truly magical. Despite dealing with a wrist injury, the Canadian teen showed strong mental resilience. After losing the first set to Osaka, who dominated early, Mboko made a powerful comeback. In the final game, she fought off Osaka’s serve, coming back from 40-15 down to win with a dramatic rush to the net and a huge forehand winner.

The win left Mboko in tears, as the crowd cheered wildly. “I couldn’t believe it,” she said, overwhelmed by the support and her own performance.

Record-Breaking Performance

Mboko’s victory was part of an impressive run at the National Bank Open. In the semifinals, she made an incredible comeback against Elena Rybakina. This saves a match point and pushing through a wrist injury to win 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (4).

Throughout the tournament, she also defeated Sofia Kenin, Coco Gauff, and three former Grand Slam champions—an achievement no other Canadian has reached in a single WTA event.

As a result of her win, Mboko will rise to No. 25 in the WTA singles rankings, a remarkable leap from outside the top 300 at the start of 2025. The young Canadian is now considered one of the most exciting prospects in women’s tennis.

Her victory in Montreal caps off a breakout season, which also saw her shine at Wimbledon and the French Open, and her rise through the lower-tier ITF Tour. Her success has captivated fans across Canada and beyond, positioning her as one of the future stars of the sport.

Looking Ahead

Next up for Mboko is the Cincinnati Open, another WTA 1000-level event. While she has earned a performance bye for the tournament, she may still withdraw to rest before the U.S. Open, where she has earned automatic entry into the main draw beginning August 24.
