7 Koerner Hall Concerts to Catch This Fall, From Mariza to Miles Davis at 100
Koerner Hall starts its 2026–27 season with a fast run across classical, global, vocal and jazz programming. The opening weekend pairs Canadian violinist James Ehnes with pianist Andrew Armstrong, then turns the room over to Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Touré. Later in October, Mariza returns, and November opens with chamber music and the first concert in a Miles Davis and John Coltrane centenary series.

1. James Ehnes marks 50 with Brahms, Bartók and a Toronto premiere

Ehnes begins the season with pianist Andrew Armstrong and a program built around contrast rather than a greatest-hits birthday set. Sinding’s Collection of Songs and Brahms’s Third Violin Sonata lead into Imaginal, a new work by Canadian composer Carmen Braden, before Bartók’s First Rhapsody closes the night. 2. Vieux Farka Touré brings Malian blues to Bloor Street

Touré’s guitar style connects Malian blues with rock and soul, making this the sharpest change of pace in the opening weekend. Toronto-based Ethiopian singer Melat Mengesha, winner of the first season of Balageru, opens the show. The concert is presented in association with Batuki Music Society, and a post-show performance continues in the Leslie and Anna Dan Galleria.
3. Laura Jackson opens the Royal Conservatory Orchestra season

Conductor Laura Jackson leads the Royal Conservatory Orchestra in Barber’s Overture to The School for Scandal and Brahms’s Second Symphony. Violist Shyler Macaggi, winner of the 2026 Robert W. and G. Ann Corcoran Concerto Competition, takes the solo part in Bartók’s Viola Concerto. A student prelude recital starts at 6:45 p.m.
4. Orlando crosses centuries of song

Toronto-raised mezzo-soprano Ema Nikolovska and guitarist Sean Shibe build their program around the worlds of Ariosto and Virginia Woolf’s Orlando. Music by Schubert, John Dowland, Bob Dylan and Laurie Anderson appears alongside newly commissioned work by Sasha Scott, Cassandra Miller, Linda Catlin Smith and Nahre Sol. The prelude recital begins at 6 p.m.
5. Mariza returns with modern fado

Mariza’s Koerner Hall return lands on Halloween night, but the program is rooted in fado rather than costume-party theatrics. Her recordings have carried the Portuguese form onto international stages while keeping its focus on voice, lyric and guitar. Music continues in the galleria after the concert.
6. Queyras and Tharaud reconnect for cello and piano
- Date: Friday, Nov 6, 2026 at 8 p.m.

Cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras and pianist Alexandre Tharaud move through a compact sequence that includes Brahms’s First Cello Sonata, Poulenc’s Suite Française and shorter works by Schubert, Britten, Debussy, Fauré and Marais. The pairing favours quick shifts in colour and scale instead of centring the evening on one large work. A student prelude recital begins at 7 p.m.
7. John Beasley opens the Miles and Trane centenary series

Pianist, composer and arranger John Beasley leads Unlimited Miles, the first date in Koerner Hall’s five-concert tribute to Miles Davis and John Coltrane at 100. The group includes Marcus Strickland on saxophone, Sean Jones on trumpet, Ben Williams on bass and Terreon Gully on drums. Beasley played with Davis early in his career, giving the project a direct line to the music it revisits.

Koerner Hall is a 1,135-seat venue inside The Royal Conservatory at 273 Bloor Street West, between the Royal Ontario Museum and Varsity Stadium. St. George Station’s Bedford Road exit is the closest subway route; Museum Station is also nearby.
