Toronto has a new reason to celebrate, thanks to the Anne Carson Nobel Prize win. The Toronto-born poet, essayist and translator has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Swedish Academy announced the news on October 8. It praised Carson for a bold, inventive body of work that plays with the classical tradition to create new forms for modern literature. Carson earned three degrees at the University of Toronto, and she was in Iceland when she found out. Here’s what to know.

Who Is Anne Carson?

Carson was born in Toronto in 1950. As a high school student, she fell in love with ancient Greek. In fact, a Latin teacher started teaching her the language during lunch breaks. Later, Carson studied classics at the University of Toronto, where she earned her bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate. After that, she taught at schools across Canada and the U.S., including McGill University and the University of Michigan.

Today, her writing mixes poetry, essays, translation and fiction. It also pulls Greek myths and classical texts into modern stories. Her best-known books include Autobiography of Red and The Beauty of the Husband. In fact, the second one made her the first woman to win the T.S. Eliot Prize, in 2001. She was also named a Member of the Order of Canada in 2005.

Carson was in Iceland when she got the call. According to the Swedish Academy, she was surprised but very happy. Soon after, the Nobel Prize’s official account shared a photo of her in her kitchen in Reykjavík.
