Ateneo de Manila University confirmed the sudden deaths of two promising basketball players, Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili. A tragic drowning incident cut their lives short during a team-building trip in Dipaculao, Aurora, on Monday afternoon.

The devastating news sent shockwaves through local GTA basketball leagues and UAAP fans who eagerly follow Philippine collegiate sports. The University extends its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and teammates of the young men. Rising Stars Lost Too Soon

The Blue Eagles roster lost two incredible athletes who possessed massive potential and undeniable talent. Fans across the GTA and the Philippines eagerly anticipated their upcoming court appearances.

Divine Adili (21) is a foreign student-athlete anchored the team during UAAP Season 88. He dominated the court with relentless energy, averaging 8.4 points and 8.3 rebounds over 11 games.

Rene Baterbonia (19) is a 6-foot-4 incoming rookie recently led the Davao Region to a runner-up finish at the 2026 Palarong Pambansa. Ateneo coaching staff expected him to debut and make a massive impact in UAAP Season 89 later this year.

Authorities Investigate the Aurora Tragedy

Police Regional Office 3 released initial findings regarding the devastating event. Police Brigadier General Jess Mendez stated that a sudden, strong current swept the swimming athletes into much deeper waters.

Local authorities at the Dipaculao Municipal Police Station responded immediately to the distress call. Rescue teams rushed the victims to a nearby medical facility for emergency treatment. Tragically, medical professionals declared both young men dead upon arrival.
