Blizzard Warning Hits Quebec as May Long Weekend Begins
Canada’s blizzard warning is back—just in time for what’s supposed to be the unofficial start of summer. As families prepare for the May long weekend, heavy snow and strong winds are battering parts of northern Quebec, disrupting travel and defying the seasonal shift.
Up to 25 cm of Snow Expected in Northern Quebec
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a blizzard warning for regions including Kangiqsujuaq-Raglan Lake and Quaqtaq. The storm, fueled by a deepening low-pressure system near Hudson Bay, is colliding with cold air trapped over northern Quebec.
Key impacts:
- 25 cm of snow expected through the weekend.
- Winds gusting over 40 km/h, reducing visibility to near-zero.
- Travel expected to be treacherous in affected areas.
ECCC cautioned that blizzard conditions will last several hours, with visibility dropping below 400 metres due to blowing snow.
A Chilly Contrast After Record-Breaking Heat
The warning comes on the heels of a surprising spring heat wave. Southern Quebec recently experienced summer-like temperatures, while Emerson, Manitoba, recorded 37.8°C on May 11—the hottest temperature ever recorded so early in Canada.

This stark weather contrast highlights the unpredictable nature of Canada’s late spring, especially in northern regions.
Not the First Blizzard Warning This Month
This is the fourth blizzard warning issued in May and the third for this part of northern Quebec since May 8. Combined, these remote communities are home to over 1,000 residents, who have endured multiple rounds of heavy snow despite the calendar inching towards summer.
Unofficial Start to Summer Feels Far from Warm
While much of Central and Western Canada enjoy early summer conditions, northern regions remain locked in a wintry grip. The May long weekend, often seen as Canada’s kickoff to summer, will feel anything but summery for those under blizzard warnings.
