Butt Blitz Toronto: September Cleanup at Ripley’s Aquarium

Toronto volunteers can help tackle cigarette litter at Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada on September 1. The cleanup forms part of the September UNSMOKE Butt Blitz campaign led by A Greener Future.

The organization will bring volunteers together across Toronto to remove cigarette butts from public spaces. The September campaign aims to collect one million cigarette butts across Canada.

Toronto Cleanup Targets Cigarette Litter

Cigarette butts remain one of the most common types of litter found during community cleanups. A Greener Future reports that cigarette butts make up one in five pieces of litter collected during its shoreline cleanup activities.

Since 2015, volunteers have collected more than 6.3 million cigarette butts through the UNSMOKE Butt Blitz. The program sends the collected waste to TerraCycle Canada for recycling.

The campaign also highlights the environmental impact of cigarette litter. Cigarette filters can remain in the environment for years. They can also release harmful chemicals as they break down.

For Toronto residents, the cleanup offers a simple way to take action in their local community. Volunteers can spend a few hours helping remove litter from a busy downtown area.

Join the September UNSMOKE Butt Blitz

The Ripley’s Aquarium cleanup will take place on Tuesday, September 1. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Volunteers do not need previous cleanup experience. A Greener Future provides the supplies needed for the event. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and closed toe shoes.

The organization will host more UNSMOKE Butt Blitz events across Toronto throughout September. Residents can choose from several cleanup locations and dates.
