A Minecraft Movie Sparks Chaos, Cheers, and Controversy in Theatres

A Minecraft Movie may not be a hit with critics, but it’s winning over the most important crowd — kids. Since its release, the film has transformed ordinary movie screenings into loud, chaotic celebrations. Some fans are calling it “Rocky Horror for Gen Alpha.”

A Critical Flop, But a Fan-Fueled Phenomenon

The animated film — starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa — received lukewarm reviews. Critics described it as “bizarre,” “messy,” and even “a hyperactive hot-pink mess.” Yet, over its opening weekend, it raked in a staggering $163 million across North America.

The Birth of a Rowdy Movie Trend

What started as a fun nod to the beloved game quickly evolved into a full-blown theatre ritual. Audiences — mostly preteens — have been shouting lines, clapping on cue, and even throwing popcorn during standout moments.

One scene, featuring a baby zombie riding a chicken (aka the now-iconic “Chicken Jockey”), has taken on a life of its own. TikTok clips show packed theatres exploding into cheers whenever the phrase is shouted.

“The whole cinema erupted after yelling Chicken Jockey,” wrote one X user.
“It was like a rock concert,” said another.

Even the mention of simple Minecraft items like “Flint and Steel” gets an instant cheer. When Jack Black sings, kids get up and dance in the aisles.

“Rocky Horror for Gen Alpha”

The interactive vibe has drawn comparisons to cult classics like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and The Room, where audience participation is the norm. Social media users have dubbed this phenomenon “peak audience energy.”

Warner Bros. co-chair Michael DeLuca even acknowledged the hype, saying:

“We made the movie for the fans, and they exceeded our expectations.”

But Not Everyone Is Applauding

While many embrace the chaos, others are fed up. Some theatregoers find the noise, mess, and interruptions more irritating than fun. Posts from theatre staff on Reddit show piles of popcorn and trash left behind.

“Apparently trashing theatres is now a TikTok trend,” one employee wrote.

This follows recent pushback during Wicked screenings, where cinemas had to warn fans to stop singing. The Minecraft craze has now added fuel to the ongoing debate around movie theatre etiquette in the TikTok age.
