GM Recalls Over 40,000 Chevrolet Blazer EVs Over Parking Brake Defect
GM recalls more than 40,000 Chevrolet Blazer EVs from the 2024 and 2025 model years due to a serious brake defect. According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a flaw in the rear parking brake wiring harness could cause the brake to engage unexpectedly or fail completely—raising the risk of both crashes and rollaway incidents.

Which Models Are Affected?
The recall targets approximately 40,233 vehicles, specifically:
- 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV
- 2025 Chevrolet Blazer EV
Vehicles manufactured after January 31, 2025, are not included, as GM redesigned the wiring harness after that date. Non-electric Blazer models are also unaffected.
What’s the Problem?
The issue centers on the rear parking brake wiring harness, which may become damaged or corroded due to how it was routed. This design allows too much flexing during regular driving, leading to wire breakage or shorts. As a result, the parking brake could:
- Engage on its own while driving
- Fail to hold the car when parked
- Trigger a “Service Parking Brake” warning
- Prevent the vehicle from shifting out of park
GM says four drivers reported these symptoms, prompting the recall.

Safety Risks Involved
- Unintended brake activation while moving could cause the vehicle to suddenly stop, increasing crash risk.
- Brake failure while parked could lead to rollaway incidents, especially on slopes.
What Will GM Do About It?
GM dealers will inspect the affected vehicles and perform the following, free of charge:
- Reroute the brake wiring harness
- Apply anti-abrasive tape to prevent future damage
- Replace the harness if damage is already present
The faulty part was manufactured by Lear Electrical Systems De Mexico, identified as HARNESS ASM-CHAS WRG.
When Will Owners Be Notified?
GM will begin mailing notification letters by August 11, 2025. In the meantime, owners should stay alert for:
- Service parking brake warnings
- Difficulty shifting out of park

How Serious Is This Recall Compared to Others?
This is part of a wave of recent vehicle recalls. Other automakers like Ford, Toyota, Ram, Volkswagen, and Nissan have also issued recalls affecting hundreds of thousands of vehicles in 2025. As automakers continue to expand their electric fleets, safety systems remain under close scrutiny.
