Bus Cancellations Today in Ontario: Ice Storm Impacts School Routes

· ·

A messy mix of freezing rain, ice pellets, and snow hit Southern Ontario on Wednesday, leading to slick roads and power outages—and setting the stage for potential bus cancellations today. While most of the precipitation is expected to turn to rain overnight, icy conditions could still impact school transportation in several regions Thursday morning, especially in rural and higher-elevation areas.

Trillium Lakelands Confirms Bus Cancellations

The Trillium Lakelands District School Board has already cancelled transportation for Thursday in both City of Kawartha Lakes zones. Recovery from earlier power outages continues, and downed communication towers have made it difficult for bus drivers to safely coordinate routes. While schools may remain open, buses will not be running in that area.

Risk of Cancellations in Northern Ontario

Sudbury, North Bay, and Parry Sound face the highest risk for school bus cancellations. In these zones, freezing rain is forecast to continue into the night, only tapering off near morning. Icy roads are likely to persist into the start of the school day, prompting precautionary measures from local school boards known for putting safety first—especially on rural routes.

Central and Eastern Ontario: A Mixed Forecast

In Central and Eastern Ontario, the situation is less certain. Here’s what to expect:

  • 25% to 50% chance of bus cancellations, depending on the region
  • Higher elevation and rural areas may see more disruptions
  • Southern zones—where rain is expected earlier—have a better chance for improved roads

Despite the messy start, conditions should improve overnight as temperatures rise and precipitation turns to rain. But for many rural communities, untreated side roads and power-related issues may still complicate travel.

What Families Should Know

  • Monitor your local school board’s website early Thursday for updates
  • Check road and weather reports if you’re in a rural or northern region
  • Have backup plans in place in case of last-minute transportation cancellations

While widespread school closures aren’t guaranteed, localized disruptions remain a real possibility.
