Heat Warnings Persist Across Southern B.C. and Vancouver Island as Temperatures Climb
Southern British Columbia is bracing for one of its hottest stretches of the year, with heat warnings in place for multiple regions. Officials are urging residents and travellers to take precautions as temperatures could exceed 35°C in some areas and remain elevated through at least Tuesday.
Areas Under Heat Warnings
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued alerts for:
- Inland and eastern sections of Vancouver Island
- Howe Sound, Whistler, and Pemberton in the Sea-to-Sky region
- North Thompson, Fraser Canyon, South Thompson, and South Okanagan
Daytime highs in the Fraser Canyon, South Thompson, and South Okanagan are expected to range between 35°C and 37°C, with overnight lows near 18°C to 20°C. On east Vancouver Island and in Whistler, highs will stay above 30°C through midweek.
Health Officials Urge Caution
Dr. Maulik Baxi, medical health officer at Fraser Health, reminded residents that even if their home community is not under a warning, travel destinations might be affected. “Be aware of the conditions where you go,” he said, advising people to avoid peak daytime heat, open windows at night, and check on vulnerable individuals.
ECCC warns that seniors, infants, pregnant people, individuals with disabilities, and those with chronic health conditions are at greater risk of heat-related illness. Residents are urged never to leave children or pets in parked vehicles.

Wildfire Concerns on Vancouver Island
The Wesley Ridge wildfire, burning over 590 hectares north of Cameron Lake, is in a heat-affected area. Dry and warm conditions could increase smoke and fire activity.
Nearly 300 properties remain under evacuation order, including Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park. Another 353 properties are under evacuation alert. Officials say a partial return for some residents south of Warn Way could happen Monday, but the timeline depends on fire behaviour.
Record Temperatures Possible
The Weather Network reports that this heat wave could bring the hottest temperatures of the summer to several B.C. cities. Vancouver may record its first 30°C day of 2025 on Monday or Tuesday.

While this heat event is expected to be short-lived, with cooling and possible rain later in the week, wildfire risk will remain high in southern regions until conditions ease.
