Man Shot and Killed Outside Yorkdale Mall Parking Lot in Early-Morning Attack

A man in his 20s was shot and killed early Thursday morning in the northeast parking lot of Yorkdale Shopping Centre in North York, prompting an active homicide investigation by Toronto police.

Targeted Attack Near Mall Entrance

The shooting happened just before 6:15 a.m. near Entrance 3 of the mall, in the area of Highway 401 and Dufferin Street. Police confirmed the victim died at the scene from gunshot wounds. Although they haven’t released the man’s identity, investigators believe someone targeted him.

No Immediate Threat to the Public

Detective Sajeev Nair told reporters that authorities are in the early stages of their investigation and are exploring all leads. Police haven’t released any suspect descriptions but assured the public there’s no ongoing threat to safety.

Witnesses described the shooting as similar to a drive-by, with one individual telling 680 NewsRadio that they heard five to ten gunshots just meters from where they were working. The suspect or suspects reportedly fled the scene by vehicle.

Mall Remains Open Amid Police Investigation

In a public statement, Yorkdale Mall condemned the violence, saying, “Gun violence has no place in our city.” They emphasized that enhanced security and surveillance systems allowed for a rapid response, and confirmed that the shooting happened before business hours.

The mall remains open today, but Toronto Police have closed part of the northeast parking lot while the Homicide and Missing Persons Unit continues its investigation.
