Studio Ghibli’s ‘Spirited Away’ Stage Show Makes Its North American Premiere in Toronto in 2027
Spirited Away Toronto is happening, as the original Japanese stage production of the Studio Ghibli classic makes its North American premiere next year. It plays a 15-week run at the Princess of Wales Theatre from May 6 to Aug. 15, 2027. The show is performed in Japanese with English surtitles by a company of 50 actors, puppeteers and musicians. How to Get Tickets
Mirvish says tickets will go on sale in October 2026, but the exact date has not been posted yet. For first access, sign up for priority booking on the Mirvish website.
The show is not suitable for children under 6. Also, every child needs their own seat for the whole performance.
What to Expect on Stage
The production brings Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar-winning film to life with large puppets, detailed sets and costumes. A live orchestra also plays Joe Hisaishi’s original score.
It follows Chihiro, a girl who stumbles into a world of spirits while moving to a new home. After her parents are turned into pigs, she must work in a magical bathhouse to free them.
A Global Hit Comes to Toronto
TOHO commissioned the stage version, which premiered in Tokyo in 2022. John Caird, the original co-director of Les Misérables, directs and co-adapted it with Maoko Imai.
In 2024, the show had a record-breaking run at the London Coliseum. It then won Best New Play at the 2025 WhatsOnStage Awards and earned four Olivier nominations. After Toronto, it moves to the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles in fall 2027.
With Toronto getting the first North American dates, Spirited Away is set to be one of the biggest theatre tickets of 2027.
