Ford Recalls 694,271 SUVs for Fire Risk from Cracked Fuel Injectors

· · ·

Ford has issued a major recall of 694,271 vehicles—including the popular Bronco Sport and Escape SUVs—due to a fire risk caused by cracked fuel injectors. The recall affects 2021–2024 Bronco Sport and 2020–2022 Escape models with 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engines.

This action expands on earlier recalls from 2022 and 2024 and comes after a yearlong investigation revealed that faulty fuel injectors could leak, increasing the chances of an under-hood fire.

Why Are These Vehicles Being Recalled?

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the fuel injectors may crack, allowing liquid fuel or vapor to leak into the engine compartment. If this fuel reaches hot surfaces near the exhaust or turbo system, it could ignite, posing a serious safety risk.

While Ford estimates only 0.3% of affected vehicles have the defect, that still equates to over 2,000 vehicles that could experience dangerous fuel leaks. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported so far.

Interim Fix In Place—But Final Remedy Still in Development

Ford is currently offering a free software update that helps detect cracked fuel injectors and reduce the risk of fire by adjusting temperatures around ignition sources. This update is an interim fix, and owners will be notified again once a permanent solution is ready.

Letters will begin reaching owners starting August 18, 2025. In the meantime, owners can visit the NHTSA website to check if their VIN is part of recall no. 25V467000.

What Ford Models Are Affected?

Here’s the full list of impacted vehicles in this recall:

  • 2021–2024 Ford Bronco Sport (built between Feb. 5, 2020 – Feb. 8, 2024)
  • 2020–2022 Ford Escape (built between Nov. 19, 2018 – Dec. 16, 2022)

These vehicles all share the same 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine, which has been linked to the cracking fuel injectors.

This Is Not the Only Ford Recall This Month

Just days earlier, Ford also recalled nearly one million vehicles in the U.S. and Canada due to fuel pump issues that could lead to engine stalls and crash risks. That separate recall affects a wide range of Ford and Lincoln vehicles, including:

  • F-Series trucks (F-150 to F-550, 2021–2023)
  • Ford Explorer, Expedition, Bronco (2021–2022)
  • Lincoln Navigator and Aviator (2021–2023)
  • Ford Mustang and Police Interceptor Utility (2021–2022)

That issue is tied to low-pressure fuel pump failures, particularly during hot weather or low fuel conditions. A remedy is still in development.

Estimated Cost and Impact

Ford estimates the fuel injector recall could cost over $570 million, according to filings shared with Reuters. This cost will be reflected in the company’s second quarter 2025 financials.

While the financial hit is steep, Ford maintains that customer safety is the top priority. Owners who already received earlier software updates may not need further action, but the company will confirm eligibility by mail or online.
