Train Stopped Due to Mechanical Problems

The train, known as The Ocean, left Halifax on Sunday morning but encountered issues around Truro, roughly 100 kilometers north of the city, by early afternoon. The mechanical problem resulted in the train halting outside Truro, and passengers noticed a loss of air conditioning in the car. The delay lasted about 30 minutes before the train was able to reach Truro station.

Passenger Luke Thompson, traveling with his wife and six children, was heading to Amherst, N.S., after a family visit in Halifax. He mentioned that sandwiches were provided to passengers during the delay, and despite the inconvenience, the crew ensured passenger safety.

Passengers Disembark, Bus Transport Arranged

Upon arrival in Truro, passengers were informed that the train service had been cancelled, and Via Rail arranged for bus transportation to continue their journey. Luke Thompson and his family waited four hours for the bus to take them further, while others were offered full refunds or travel credits for the disruption. Via Rail also offered a 50% refund for those awaiting alternative transportation.

Frustration Among Passengers

The mechanical issue caused significant frustration among the affected passengers, especially those traveling to locations further along the route. Passengers were left to arrange their own transportation after being informed of the cancellation. Thompson said, “You can’t pull buses out of thin air,” referring to the delay in arranging alternate transport.

Via Rail’s Statement

Via Rail issued a statement explaining that it would provide buses to accommodate passengers heading toward their destinations. It also assured that passengers impacted by the cancellation would receive appropriate compensation.

This issue is the latest in a series of service disruptions for Via Rail’s Halifax-Montreal route, as the company works to improve its service, including plans to refurbish cars for future operations.
