Over 1,400 Tarantulas Found Hidden in Cake Boxes at German Airport
German customs officials uncovered a shocking smuggling attempt after discovering more than 1,400 live tarantulas hidden inside chocolate sponge cake boxes. Authorities intercepted the unusual shipment from Vietnam when it arrived at Cologne Bonn Airport in western Germany.
A Suspicious Smell Leads to a Shocking Discovery
A “noticeable smell” coming from the boxes tipped off authorities, since it didn’t match the sweet scent of sponge cake. When they opened the shipment, they found about 1,500 plastic containers, each holding a young tarantula. Authorities made the seizure on June 18, 2025, but only revealed it this week.
“This discovery left even the most seasoned officers speechless,” said Jens Ahland, a spokesperson for Cologne’s customs office. While unusual shipments are not rare, the scale of this case stood out.
Many Tarantulas Didn’t Survive the Journey
Sadly, many of the spiders didn’t survive, likely due to poor transport conditions in violation of Germany’s animal welfare laws. The surviving tarantulas were placed under the care of an expert handler. Officials continue to assess the shipment’s estimated market value.
Ahland described the incident as an “extraordinary seizure” that highlights the cruel extremes some people pursue for profit. “It saddens us to see what some people do to animals,” he added.

Criminal Investigation Underway
German customs confirmed that criminal proceedings are now underway against the intended recipient, who is located in the Sauerland region, east of the airport. Allegations include customs violations and failure to pay import duties.
The case adds to growing concern as traffickers smuggle animals for the exotic pet trade under dangerous and unethical conditions.
