Months of Warnings Ignored

Between June and August 2024, two teens faced escalating online threats from a 14-year-old classmate. The parents reported these threats to the police and the school several times. They filed police reports and exchanged numerous emails with school officials. However, no substantial intervention occurred before the incident.

One parent recalled, “We thought we did everything we were supposed to do.” They had hoped the law would handle the situation, preventing any harm. Unfortunately, their worst fears became reality.

The Attack: A Tragic Failure in Prevention

On September 5, 2024, the 15-year-old Saskatoon teen suffered burns on 40% of her body. The attacker poured a flammable liquid on her and set her on fire in a school hallway. The accused, now 15, faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, and arson.

Despite previous warnings, the school had allowed the accused to attend classes with a monitored safety plan. However, details of this plan were not shared with the victim’s parents until after the attack.

Parents Demand Transparency and Change

Following the incident, the school and Saskatoon Police Service have declined to comment due to ongoing legal proceedings. However, Saskatoon Public Schools confirmed changes, including:

  • An anonymous reporting tool for threats.
  • Improved documentation for concerning student behavior.
  • Enhanced training for school administrators.
  • A new Student Connection Program for at-risk students.

The parents of the injured teen remain frustrated. “We want an open accounting of what happened,” said her father. They seek transparency to ensure no other family endures the same tragedy.

A Long Road to Recovery

The victim continues her healing journey, supported by family and friends. She refuses to let the attack define her. Her parents remain focused on her well-being while navigating the slow legal process.

“She’s a strong young woman. She has tough days, but she pushes through,” said her father.

As the legal case unfolds, the parents hope for systemic changes to protect students from similar threats in the future.
