Two months after the tragic passing of character actor Peter Greene, officials have released the formal cause of death. Known for his intense and memorable roles in 90s classics like Pulp Fiction and The Mask, Greene was found deceased in his New York City apartment late last year. The New York City Chief Medical Examiner’s office has now provided clarity on the circumstances, ruling the death an accident.

Medical Examiner Releases Official Findings

Fatal Injury Ruled Accidental

On Wednesday, Feb. 18, the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner confirmed that Peter Greene died from a “gunshot wound of the left axilla with injury of brachial artery.” The report classifies the manner of death as an accident.

The injury occurred in the axilla (armpit) area, severing the brachial artery, which is the major vessel supplying blood to the arm. This severe injury would have caused rapid and fatal blood loss. The determination of an accidental manner of death closes the immediate speculation surrounding the incident, which People Magazine originally reported following the discovery of his body.

Discovery in New York City Apartment

Authorities discovered the 60-year-old actor on December 12, 2025, in his Lower East Side home. Neighbors grew concerned after hearing music playing continuously from his apartment for over 24 hours and alerted the property manager.

Greene’s manager of over a decade, Gregg Edwards, confirmed the timeline to NBC News, noting that he had just spoken with the actor earlier that week. Edwards described Greene as a man with a “heart as big as gold,” emphasizing that while he played villains perfectly, his real-life persona was gentle and kind.

A Career Defined by Iconic Villains

Greene left an indelible mark on 1990s cinema with his distinct look and commanding screen presence. He famously portrayed Zed, the sadistic security guard in Quentin Tarantino’s masterpiece Pulp Fiction (1994). That same year, he starred opposite Jim Carrey in The Mask, playing the suave but dangerous antagonist Dorian Tyrell.

His filmography extends well beyond these two hits. Greene delivered a critically acclaimed performance as a man struggling with schizophrenia in Clean, Shaven (1993) and appeared in other major titles including:

  • The Usual Suspects (1995)
  • Blue Streak (1999)
  • Training Day (2001)

Final Projects and Legacy

At the time of his death, Greene was channeling his energy into socially conscious projects. He was co-producing and narrating a documentary titled From the American People: The Withdrawal of USAID. According to Deadline, he worked alongside stars like Jason Alexander and Kathleen Turner to raise awareness about global aid issues.

Edwards highlighted this project as a testament to Greene’s character, stating that the actor wanted to “spread the word” about the cause. Greene also had upcoming roles in the thriller Mascots and the crime drama State of Confusion. He is survived by his brother and sister.
