Rogers 3G Network to Retire: What Customers Need to Know Before July 31

· · ·

Rogers Communications is preparing to retire its 3G network by July 31, 2025, and customers still using 3G devices need to make the switch to 4G LTE or 5G networks by June 30. After this date, any 3G-enabled device will lose connectivity, and users will no longer be able to make calls, send texts, or access data through the network. For those who haven’t yet upgraded, Rogers and its subsidiary, Fido, have provided several options to help facilitate the transition.

What You Need to Do Before the 3G Network Is Retired

  • Upgrade to 4G or 5G: If you’re still using a 3G device, you’ll need to upgrade to a 4G LTE or 5G-capable device to continue accessing mobile services.
  • Deadline: You have until June 30 to make the switch to avoid service disruption. After this date, devices connected only to 3G will lose all connectivity.
  • Free Transition Options: Rogers offers a customer service line and retail locations to assist in migrating to 4G or 5G at no additional cost. If your current device is compatible, simply swapping the SIM card may be enough.
  • Special Offer: If you need a new phone, Rogers provides a $0 device upgrade option for eligible customers.Rogers will charge a one-time $75 administrative fee to anyone still using a 3G device after June 30.

What Happens if You Don’t Upgrade?

  • Service Disruption: If you don’t upgrade by the deadline, you will lose the ability to make calls, send texts, or use data on your device.
  • After the deadline, Rogers will redirect any outgoing calls to a migration specialist who will assist you in exploring upgrade options.

Impact of the Transition

Rogers is making this change as part of an industry-wide shift to more modern mobile networks. Mobile service providers, including Bell and Telus, are phasing out 3G networks to improve speeds, voice quality, and overall service reliability. Rogers will charge $3 “legacy” fee to the monthly bills of customers who stay on the 3G or 2G networks, starting in May 2025. Customers will pay this charge until they upgrade to a 4G LTE or 5G device.

For those affected, Rogers is providing multiple ways to transition smoothly, including a dedicated customer service team and in-store assistance to help you upgrade without changing your plan.

Can You Keep Your Current Phone?

Not all 3G users will need to purchase a new phone. If your device supports 4G LTE or 5G, a simple SIM card swap or setting update might be enough. However, if your device is not capable of accessing these networks, you’ll need to purchase a new phone.

For more details, you can visit a Rogers retail location or contact their 3G team at 1-855-720-9035 for assistance with the upgrade process.
