Police have charged a 17-year-old boy from eastern Ontario with attempted murder and sexual assault with a weapon after he violently attacked an eight-year-old girl in Quadeville, Ontario, leaving her seriously injured.

Child Found With Life-Threatening Injuries

The incident occurred in the early hours of June 24, after police received a report of a missing child. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) located the girl along Quadeville Road at around 12:30 a.m. She suffered multiple life-threatening injuries, and paramedics transported her to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), where she remains under medical care.

At first, police suspected an animal attack and advised residents to keep their children indoors. But the OPP emphasized that they did not rule out human involvement as the investigation continued.

No Animal DNA Found

In a statement released Wednesday, the OPP said recent pathology testing on the girl’s wounds found no traces of animal DNA. Investigators consulted multiple forensic experts before determining that an animal did not cause the injuries.

Police arrested the suspect on Tuesday, and he remains in custody. The Youth Criminal Justice Act protects his identity.

Charges Filed

The teenager now faces two serious charges:

  • Attempted murder
  • Sexual assault with a weapon on a person under 16

The OPP has not released further details about the arrest but confirmed the youth will appear in court at a later date.

Community in Shock

The quiet community of Quadeville, located about 160 km west of Ottawa, was shaken by the news. Police cruisers were seen in the area earlier this week as investigators returned to the scene.

Local residents expressed disbelief at the nature of the crime. Some had long doubted the theory that an animal caused such extensive injuries.

“It’s really hard for the parents… it just didn’t feel like an animal did that,” said one neighbor.

OPP to Hold Town Hall

To address growing concerns, the OPP announced it will hold a town hall meeting in Quadeville on Saturday, July 12, to provide updates and answer residents’ questions. Full details about the time and location are expected later this week.

The police continue to ask for help from the public. Police are asking anyone with information or surveillance footage related to the case to contact the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP at 1-888-310-1122. People can also leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or www.ontariocrimestoppers.ca.
