United Airlines Resolves Technology Issue After Halting Departures Across the U.S.

· · ·

A system failure caused a nationwide ground stop on Wednesday evening, disrupting flights across the U.S. United Airlines temporarily halted all mainline departures due to a technology issue that began around 6:12 p.m. ET. Although the problem was resolved within a few hours, delays and backlogs continued through the night, affecting thousands of passengers at major airports.

Ground Stop Hits Major U.S. Airports

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the disruption and supported United in addressing the resulting flight backlog. Airports in Chicago, Denver, Newark, Houston, and San Francisco were among those impacted, with ground stops requested by United as early as 7:30 p.m. ET.

As of 9:45 p.m. ET, data from FlightAware showed that around 31% of United’s flights were delayed, and approximately 1% were canceled.

What Happened?

A United Airlines spokesperson said the disruption was due to a technology issue, not linked to recent cybersecurity concerns in aviation. The spokesperson told CNN that the airline has resolved the issue but still expects delays while it works to restore normal operations.

Flights already in the air continued to their destinations. Regional flights weren’t directly affected, but many still faced delays due to airport congestion.

Passenger Reactions

Passengers shared their experiences from airports and grounded planes. Angela Jeffers, whose flight from Nashville to Denver was delayed, said the pilot informed passengers they were “missing some numbers” needed for takeoff.

Her sister, Jessica Jeffers, was also stuck on a plane in Denver waiting to depart for Newark. She told CNN they had been on the plane for two hours with minimal air conditioning and no clear updates from staff.

United Offers Compensation

To ease the disruption, United offered affected passengers accommodations and rebooking options. Angela Jeffers confirmed she received a hotel stay and a flight rebooking for the following day.

Not a Cybersecurity Breach

Despite recent cybersecurity headlines in the travel sector, United stated this incident was unrelated. Still, the impact of the glitch shows the vulnerability of airline systems and the widespread effect a brief technical issue can have on air travel logistics.

Looking Ahead

As of Thursday morning, United Airlines is continuing efforts to clear backlogs and reduce delays. The FAA remains in close contact with the carrier to assist in resuming normal operations.
