White House COVID.gov Page Now Supports Lab Leak Theory
The White House has replaced its COVID.gov website with a new page that argues in favor of the lab leak theory as the origin of COVID-19. The page, now titled “Lab Leak: True Origins of COVID-19,” puts forward five claims linking the pandemic to a research lab in Wuhan, China.

This marks a major shift in the federal government’s COVID-19 messaging. Until last week, COVID.gov served as the central hub for vaccine, testing, and treatment resources—including support for those with Long COVID.
From Public Health to Politics
The new White House COVID.gov lab leak theory page closely mirrors the arguments laid out in the Republican-led Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic’s final report, published in December 2024. That report cited circumstantial evidence but did not provide definitive proof.
The page now claims:
- COVID-19 has traits “not found in nature.”
- All cases trace back to “a single introduction into humans.”
- Wuhan is home to China’s top SARS research lab.
- Lab workers were reportedly sick with COVID-like symptoms in late 2019.
- A natural origin theory would have surfaced by now, if valid.
Fauci, Biden, and WHO Under Fire
The new landing page targets several former health leaders, most notably Dr. Anthony Fauci. It accuses him of influencing a 2020 research paper to discredit the lab leak theory, a claim he strongly denied in a 2024 congressional hearing.
“I had no input into the content of the paper,” Fauci said. “The accusations are absolutely false and preposterous.”
The page also criticizes the World Health Organization, former President Biden, and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo for their handling of the pandemic. It slams early COVID measures like mask mandates, lockdowns, and social distancing, calling them ineffective and harmful.
A Shift in Global Messaging
This new messaging comes amid ongoing tension between the U.S. and China. President Trump, who re-entered office in January 2025, has blamed China for the pandemic and reignited efforts to withdraw from the WHO.

A CIA assessment earlier this year said the lab leak theory is “more likely” than a natural origin—but the agency admitted it has low confidence and that both scenarios are still plausible.
China, for its part, continues to deny the lab theory and calls U.S. investigations politically motivated.
COVID Resources Now Harder to Access
The transition has removed direct access to:
- Vaccine appointment tools
- Free COVID test orders
- Treatment guidance
- Long COVID support services
Archived versions of COVID.gov show it previously offered guidance on when to seek care and how to protect high-risk groups. Now, those pages are gone.
What Comes Next?
The decision to redirect COVID.gov to a partisan message signals a sharp turn in public health communication. While scientific consensus remains divided, the new website could further polarize the already contentious debate about the origins of COVID-19.
And with no clear “smoking gun,” the truth may remain out of reach—leaving politics to fill the void.
