The Toronto-based software professional had just found out he won the Lotto 6/49 Gold Ball Jackpot from the May 7 draw. But instead of instantly celebrating, Mei calmly logged into a meeting—still trying to process what had just happened.

How It Happened: A Subscription and a Suspicious Call

Mei attributes his incredible win to two small decisions: signing up for OLG.ca’s subscription service and answering a call from an unknown number.

That call, made by an Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) representative, urged him to check his account. Skeptical at first, Mei quickly googled the number while on the phone to make sure it wasn’t a scam.

When he finally opened the OLG app, the screen told him he’d won $60 million.

“My hands and feet went numb,” he said.

And then? He joined his next Zoom meeting.

Calm on the Outside, Chaos on the Inside

Although Mei was in shock, he managed to keep his cool during the workday. He didn’t tell anyone right away.

“I tried to play it cool,” he said. “Inside, my feelings were all over the place.”

After finishing work, he called his parents to share the news.

“I told them they would never have to worry about money again,” Mei recalled. “They could retire and enjoy the rest of their life.”

His parents were stunned—and initially worried it might be a scam. But knowing how careful Mei is, they were soon celebrating with him.

Future Plans: Family First, Then Travel and Education

For Mei, family is his biggest priority.

“I can now change their lives along with my own,” he said.

He wants to support his parents and make sure they can live comfortably. He also plans to buy a home in Toronto and focus on learning and exploring.

“I love to learn,” he shared. “I want to take advantage of educational opportunities and travel to different cultures.”

Among the destinations on his bucket list? Antarctica, Finland, and Iceland, where he hopes to witness the aurora borealis in person.

The Quiet Celebration

It took a few days before Mei shared the news with friends. His small circle was ecstatic.

“They were jumping for joy,” he said. “I’m not a super expressive person, but they were acting exactly how I was feeling inside.”

Despite the sudden wealth, Mei remains grounded. He plans to move forward slowly, with education, exploration, and gratitude leading the way.
