1 Dead, 4 Injured in Fiery Multi-Vehicle Crash on Gardiner Expressway
A devastating multi-vehicle crash on the Gardiner Expressway has left one person dead and four others injured, leading to hours-long road closures and a full-scale emergency response.

The incident occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8, in the westbound lanes near Yonge Street, a heavily trafficked stretch of highway in downtown Toronto. Toronto Police Acting Inspector Phil Sinclair said the collision involved at least five vehicles, and flames engulfed three of them afterward.
Intense Flames and a Flipped Vehicle
Video from the scene captured flames engulfing multiple vehicles, including one flipped onto its side in the median. A pickup truck nearby also caught fire. Toronto Fire Services quickly responded and extinguished the blaze, but paramedics pronounced one driver dead at the scene.
Paramedics confirmed that four other adults were taken to hospital. Their injuries range from minor to serious. Initially, emergency officials reported five injuries, but that number was revised later in the evening.
“This is a very tragic situation,” said Sinclair, speaking to reporters near the crash site. “It’s hard on the families, and hard on our first responders who had to witness this firsthand.”

What Caused the Collision?
The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities say the nature of the collision is unusual for that stretch of the Gardiner, especially given the heavy traffic at that hour. Witness reports suggest that the flipped vehicle may have sparked the chain reaction.
Police are appealing to the public for witnesses and dashcam footage that could help clarify what led to the incident.
Road Closures and Delays
As a result of the collision, all westbound lanes of the Gardiner Expressway remain closed from the Don Valley Parkway (DVP) to Jarvis Street. Authorities also closed the southbound DVP from Richmond Street to the Gardiner. Police warn that the closures will likely continue for several hours as investigators reconstruct the scene and gather physical evidence.
Motorists are urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
