Coldplay Thanks Toronto for Patience at ‘Weird Stadium in the Middle of Nowhere’
Coldplay’s long-awaited Toronto run kicked off this week at the brand-new Rogers Stadium, and while the music soared, fans and organizers are still grappling with the venue’s early growing pains.

Frontman Chris Martin didn’t shy away from addressing the elephant in the room. During Monday night’s performance, he thanked fans for “going through all the traffic and the travel and the trains and the waiting” just to make it to what he jokingly called “this weird stadium in the middle of nowhere.”
A Rough Start for Rogers Stadium

The 50,000-capacity Rogers Stadium, located near Downsview Park, opened last week with a performance by K-pop group Stray Kids. Fans at that show reported frustrating delays, poor signage, limited water access, and exit times of up to two hours. The feedback prompted Live Nation Canada to announce several changes ahead of Coldplay’s four-night residency.
Among the changes:
- Increased staffing both inside and outside the stadium
- Better signage to direct foot traffic
- More water stations to address hydration concerns
- A new exit strategy using three subway stations instead of funneling everyone through Downsview Park alone
Experts Say Test Events Could Have Helped
Crowd management expert Kevin Kennedy, owner of Kennedy Crowd Safety Solutions, told CBC that many of the issues could have been avoided. He noted that test events with smaller audiences are common for new venues to help predict crowd behavior and improve logistics.

“This is a new area, a new facility,” Kennedy said. “There’s going to be hiccups at the beginning, but those can be adjusted.”
He acknowledged that things seemed smoother during Coldplay’s first show compared to the previous week but added that “there’s still room for improvement.”
Fans Still Wary, But Hopeful

Rhys Parker, who attended Monday’s show, told CBC that the experience was “exactly what I expected for a venue that’s been open for a week.” He appreciated the effort made to improve conditions, even if the stadium still feels a bit unfinished.
Live Nation is expected to fine-tune operations as more events roll out at Rogers Stadium. Coldplay will continue their Toronto residency with three more shows between Tuesday and Saturday.
