Vancouver Police Warn of Increased Distraction Thefts This Summer
As the longer, brighter days of summer arrive, Vancouver police are issuing a warning about an increase in distraction thefts. These types of robberies, where perpetrators confuse victims and quickly steal valuables, have been a growing issue in the Lower Mainland, particularly in residential areas. Jewelry, money, and other valuables are commonly targeted in these crimes.

A Personal Account of Distraction Thefts
Richard Jeha, a hairstylist and owner of Richard Jeha Salon in Vancouver, was recently a victim of such a theft. While walking his dog in the Kerrisdale neighbourhood, he was approached by a woman who offered him a strange-looking ring. She then asked to see the bracelet he was wearing, which had been a gift from a loved one in Lebanon.
Jeha declined, but the woman, along with a man waiting in a nearby car, quickly turned aggressive. As the woman grabbed his elbow, the man in the car snatched Jeha’s bracelet and cross necklace, which had sentimental value to him since childhood.
“I tried to yell at them, but they were gone in less than a minute,” Jeha said. Thankfully, two bystanders helped him call 911 after the incident.
How Distraction Thefts Are Carried Out
Constable Tania Visintin of the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) explained that these thefts are often carried out by sophisticated groups. The robbers typically approach their victims with a sob story, gaining their trust before making the theft. These crimes have been especially prevalent in the south and southeast areas of Vancouver, though they occur across the city.

“These thieves approach people in yards, on porches, and sometimes even in their driveways. They’re often so convincing that victims don’t even realize they’ve been robbed until it’s too late,” said Const. Visintin.
Rising Concerns and Police Efforts
Since the beginning of the year, the VPD has received reports of over 70 distraction thefts. This crime trend is expected to rise as summer continues. The police are prioritizing these cases, and efforts are underway to catch the thieves, though the number of groups involved makes the task challenging.
Other cities in the Lower Mainland, such as Burnaby and Surrey, have also reported similar thefts, with some victims losing family heirlooms. The Burnaby RCMP has issued a warning following a string of such crimes in recent weeks.
Tips for Protecting Yourself
If you are approached by a stranger and feel uncomfortable, police recommend yelling or making noise to attract the attention of others nearby. Jeha, reflecting on his experience, said, “I wish I had not worn my cross visibly. It’s a well-learned lesson.”

Despite the traumatic experience, Jeha emphasized that it has not affected his sense of safety in his community. “I still feel safe walking in my neighborhood,” he said.
