Ottawa’s National Holocaust Monument Named One of the World’s Most Beautiful Buildings
Canada just earned global recognition on a prestigious architectural list — and it’s not a skyscraper, parliament building, or famous museum. The National Holocaust Monument in Ottawa, Ontario has been named one of the 24 most beautiful buildings in the world by TimeOut, making it the only Canadian structure to receive this honour.

National Holocaust Monument as a Monument of Memory and Meaning
Located in Memorial Park at 1918 Chaudière Crossing, the National Holocaust Monument was completed in 2017 and designed to serve as a powerful reminder of one of the darkest chapters in human history. TimeOut praised it not only for its stark and thoughtful design but also for its ability to spark reflection.
The monument’s form is striking — it consists of six triangular concrete volumes arranged to form a Star of David. The design creates a journey through space, with one path ascending toward the future, while another descends into an immersive space of remembrance, featuring murals, photographs, and historical context.
“Landscape of Loss, Memory and Survival”
The full title of the monument is Landscape of Loss, Memory and Survival. This name reflects both its aesthetic and emotional impact. Visitors walk through walls lined with 21 interpretive panels. These panels display photographic landscapes of Holocaust sites and facts about the genocide. The exhibits are carefully curated to preserve memory and promote education.
According to the National Capital Commission, the monument ensures that the lessons of the Holocaust and the contributions of survivors to Canada remain visible. It helps ensure these stories are remembered for future generations.

Why TimeOut Chose National Holocaust Monument

In announcing the list, TimeOut wrote, “It’s our collective duty to learn from the past, and commemorating dark chapters in our history with such stark monuments is one way to encourage that vital introspection.” The monument stood out for its bold architectural form and the thoughtful way it connects physical space with memory.
